turning off curly quotes in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has a feature that changes straight quotes and apostrophes into curly quotes (often called smart quotes). Invariably these display as something like this: ’ when published online. Here's how to turn them off in Word:

In Word 2003

Select Tools — AutoCorrect Options — AutoFormat As You Type. Clear the 'Straight quotes' with 'smart quotes' check box and click OK.

In Word 2007

1. Open a Word document and click the Microsoft Office button (in 2007 it's the round button in the top LH corner of the screen), and then click Word Options, which is an oblong button at the bottom of the list..
2. Click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options.
3. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following:
Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, clear the 'Straight quotes' with 'smart quotes' check box, then click OK.
