Quotations that are more than about thirty words long are usually indented from the text margin and set in smaller type. They are called block quotations and, because they are differentiated from the text in this way, they do not need quotation marks.

The first, or opening blockquote tag should follow directly on from the preceding text with no space, as the tag creates a paragraph break. The closing tag, however, should be followed by a manual paragraph break (hit ‘enter’ twice).
An indented quotation consisting of more than one paragraph will need opening and closing blockquote tags around each paragraph.
